About the Book

Felicity Heaton
Hella is one witch who is done with relationships. Having rid herself of a clingy nymph, she’s determined to stay single and savour everything her fae town in Geneva has to offer—with no strings attached. The trouble is, it turns out breaking up with a king isn’t as easy as she’d thought. Her ex just sent a legion to kidnap her and take her to the faerie realm of Lucia.

And he wants to make her his queen.

Grant MacKinnon is one wolf shifter who prefers a quiet life. His home in a glen in Scotland, his small wolf pack, and fine whisky is all he needs. The trouble is, a witch in the fae town in Fort William just cursed him to die if he doesn’t find his fated mate and bring her to her. Now he craves a female he’s never met, one he was convinced didn’t exist, and he refuses to believe she’s really his one true mate… until he sets eyes on the beautiful blue-haired lass.

And his wolf instincts howl that she was made for him.

And when he realises she’s in danger and another male wants her as his queen, MacKinnon will stop at nothing to protect her and claim her as his mate.

Excerpt

Life was pretty sweet.

Hella ambled along the lakeshore, the heels of her black knee-high boots clicking on the pale golden flagstones that formed the broad promenade and her gaze on the stunningly blue water to her right as it twinkled in the artificial sunlight. She sipped her iced coffee, a bounce in her step, her whole body feeling lighter—brighter—for finally having swept off the oh-so-clingy nymph.

Ethyrian had been fun for a while. Charming. Rich. Handsome—no—beautiful. Hella wasn’t sure a man should be beautiful, but that was nymphs for you. They weren’t gorgeous like incubi, who all looked as if they had just stepped out of Hollywood and easily gave Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds a run for their money. No. Nymphs crossed the line into beautiful, every single one of them looking for all the world as if they had just stepped out of the wood elf kingdom in Lord of the Rings.

Man, she could really go for some Legolas right now.

She scowled, pushed that thought aside, and stopped her roaming gaze before she could single out any eligible males in the crowded promenade. She wasn’t going to backslide. This was going to be her year. One devoted to exploring everything the fae town she lived in had to offer.

Which was a lot.

The damned nymph popped back into her head.

Hella booted him back out of it.

She had a policy when it came to her bedfellows. She didn’t do commitment. She didn’t do clingy. She most definitely didn’t do men who cried like babies and begged her to take them back.

Hella had flatly told him no and goodbye and had kicked him to the curb.

For a man who had been desperate to stay with her, he certainly hadn’t been calling all hours of the day or making wild attempts to change her mind. Which was strange.

It might have been a bit disappointing if it hadn’t allowed her the space and freedom to expand her horizons.

Hella flashed a saucy wink at a pair of panther shifters loitering outside one of the taverns to her left that lined the broad pavement, facing the huge lake. The younger of the two took the bait, his smile nothing short of salacious as he gave her a sexy, slow once-over, raking his golden eyes from her hair to her boots and back again. Currently, she was working her way through all the eligible males in the fae town.

She glanced at the buildings that encircled the lake, crammed into the cavern that sat beneath a mountain, and realised that was a lot of men. Fenix, her incubus best-bud, was going to be kept in tonics and pills for a long time thanks to her current foray into sexually exploring every possible species—bar those classified as demon breeds like incubi—to see what suited her tastes best.

She hadn’t tried panther yet.

She twirled a strand of her wavy blue hair around her fingers and sipped on her drink, making sure he got a good eyeful of the way she wrapped her glossy lips around the straw.

His low growl sent a thrill down her spine as he stepped towards her. His friend put a halt to everything by grabbing his arm and tugging him back, and saying something that had the handsome shifter frowning at him. Maybe they were going to fight over her. Two females stepped out of the tavern holding four tankards and made a beeline for the males. Hella shrugged. Or maybe not.

She turned her cheek to them, no longer interested in what either male had to offer. She also didn’t do cheats. Anyone who warmed her bed for a night or two needed to be unattached.

The last thing she needed was angry females banging down her door or spreading malicious talk about her. It was bad for business.

No one wanted potions, ointments or spells from witches liable to screw others over. People tended not to separate a witch’s personal life from their business practice. If she was known to cheat when it came to pursuing pleasure, she couldn’t be trusted to not cheat when it came to the wares she sold. Plenty of witches had fallen foul of that and had been driven out of business, or worse, out of the fae town in which they lived.

Hella took in the elegant pastel pink, cream and dove-grey four-storey buildings that lined the promenade, their lead roofs absorbing the bright sunlight that bathed their façades. They resembled the buildings in Geneva, the nearest mortal town, a classic European air about them. The ones that acted as hotels for visiting immortals had French doors and balconies for each room rather than windows, offering a view of the lake to everyone who stayed there. Others were taverns with apartments above them, and some were shops and other businesses.

She drifted towards the large windows that lined the lowest floors of a row of stores, admiring the colourful glass bottles in the perfume emporium and the latest fashions displayed in the next building. Her gaze dropped to her black dress. Witches had to wear black dresses. It was tradition. No one wanted to buy magical goods from a woman in a pink dress or linen slacks and a camisole. A witch had to look the part.

Hella had pushed the limits of what was acceptable, testing out several dresses in her years to see how far she could go without turning off her clients and driving them elsewhere. Rather than the drab ankle-length dress many witches wore—mainly those fresh from the coven—she chose to wear knee-length empire-line dresses or summer dresses that cinched in at the waist and were stitched with faint violet stars. She even wore corseted dresses that showed a little more of her wares than was appropriate according to most circles in witch society.

Today, she had picked her favourite strapless empire-line dress, one that had a sheer black layer over the silky underlayer. That top layer was folded into pleats around her breasts, and beneath them there was a delicate band of ribbon embroidered with silver swirls and dots.

She always felt good in this dress. It drew the eye to her best assets.

She also didn’t do ankle boots. She pushed the boundaries there too, choosing knee-high leather boots that laced up the front and had a comfortable three-inch block heel.

She eyed a pretty amethyst brooch on one of the dresses in the window display and drifted towards it, her gaze transfixed on it as the polished stone and gold filigree that surrounded it glittered in the warm light. If she couldn’t wear colours other than black, maybe she could accessorise. She had never tried wearing jewellery before. Surely that wouldn’t turn her clients off?

“Want it?” A male voice rolled over her and she tensed, her head whipping to her right. Disappointment flooded her when she found herself face to face with a squat, ageing man who was wearing half a tankard of ale down the front of his leather jerkin. He slurred, “I’ll buy it for you.”

In exchange for what?

Hella really didn’t want to know the answer to that question, so she politely smiled and moved away, heading at speed for the lake and not slowing until she was sure she was alone again.

She dumped her empty drink in the nearest bin and surveyed the lake, losing herself in it as the water sparkled and its beauty hit her all over again. She was sure she would never grow tired of this view. The elegant buildings hugged the shore as far as the eye could see, ending only at the far side of the manmade lake where a slice of bright green replaced them. A dense forest rose up beyond the park, clinging to the rugged slope. Above the trees, the rocky roof of the cavern curled towards her.

Hella had helped with the spell that turned the ceiling of the cavern into a sky for the most part. Originally, it had channelled whatever weather was happening above the mountain they were under. The town hadn’t particularly been happy when they had discovered that weather included snow and rain too, so on days when it was inclement topside, the spell defaulted to a fake blue sky and sunshine.

Which had led to the town demanding they do a new spell that made the days always sunny and warm, and the nights always clear and moonlit and blanketed with stars.

She tipped her head back and bathed in the warmth of the sunlight, and was humming to herself before she realised what she was doing. What could she put on the menu tonight? Maybe she could find some eligible bachelor panthers and convince them to warm her bed. If she wandered south, into the network of alleyways that connected the broader avenues in the town, she would eventually end up in the area of the cavern where the townhouses and apartment buildings gave way to sprawling walled compounds. The shifters liked their space and had established themselves quickly in the town, grabbing a lot of the vacant land for themselves. One of the compounds belonged to panthers. The one next to it belonged to tigers.

The two breeds were always fighting like cats and… cats.

Still, if she couldn’t find a panther to sample, she could always bag herself a tiger. They were excellent lovers, incredibly acrobatic. She had learned a few things from the tigers she had bedded over the years.

She turned towards the next alley, feeling more positive about the evening ahead of her as she recalled her past exploits.

Her step slowed as she experienced a sudden sensation that something had shifted. Her mood? The air? She wasn’t sure.

Whatever it was, it felt off.

Wrong.

She slowly took in her surroundings, that feeling growing at an alarming rate. The promenade was busy, with a lot of groups hanging out in front of stores or beside the lake. Other groups were moving, chatting animatedly to each other, and there were some solo people like her too. Some of those males and females meandered as she was, enjoying the warm sunshine, while others moved with purpose through the crowd, heading somewhere. She scanned them all, seeking the source of the sensation building inside her, and her fingertips tingled as her magic rose to the fore.

Hella looked over her shoulder in the direction she had come.

And spotted them.

A dozen burly, drop-dead-gorgeous men heading her way.

Hella hitched her skirts with her left hand, aware this was going to come down to a chase, and possibly a fight.

Because apparently, nymph kings didn’t take no for an answer after all.

She summoned a protective spell and a speed spell in her mind, chanting the incantations as quickly as she could manage, and twisted back in the direction she had been heading.

And slammed straight into a broad, impressively cut bare chest.

Hella tilted her head back, her gaze roaming up the thick slabs of his pectorals to a strong but elegant neck, the spells forgotten as her stomach dropped.

The beautiful blond’s lips quirked into a satisfied half-smile, the pointed tips of his ears showing as the breeze caught his long hair and shifted it across his shoulders, and his blue eyes piercing her.

Hello, Legolas.

She might have purred if it wasn’t for one small fact.

He was a nymph.

His stunning eyes narrowed and his hand shot forwards, his grip bruising and unyielding as it closed around her arm, fingers pressing deep enough that pain shot up to her shoulder and down to her hand.

Life suddenly didn’t look as sweet.

Panic seized her as firmly as his large hand as she heard the other nymphs closing in and the air hummed with familiar power. He was preparing to teleport. She swiftly raised her left knee, aiming for the sweet spot between his green leather clad legs as she quickly worked through the incantations.

He released her and blocked her leg.

And slammed a cold metal cuff around her right wrist with the other.

The power that had been surging through her disappeared, the incantation in her head nothing but empty words as the bespelled shackles did their work, severing the connection between her and her magic.

Hella grunted as two more nymphs grabbed her from behind, slamming her forwards into the larger male. She elbowed one in his stomach, hard enough that he loosed a very satisfying grunt and stumbled back a step. She was quick to seize the small amount of space she had gained, leaning away from the one who was trying to shackle her and cocking her fist. Another of the nymph’s stopped her before she could punch him, tightly gripping her arm and holding her back.

The male with the shackles pulled her arm free of his grip and yanked it towards him, hard enough that pain shot through her shoulder as she fell against him. He shoved her back a few inches and she could only glare at him as he fastened the other cuff around her free wrist, his satisfied smirk growing wider, and teleported with her.

But in the breath between the fae town and an unfamiliar room, a sound rang in her ears, one that sent a chill skittering down her spine and spread strange warmth through her veins.

A beast howled in rage.

MY REVIEW

Well, Hella certainly put Kin through a bit of hell in their getting to know each other time, but it was all good reading!

Hella is a witch that has no wish to be in a relationship, or controlled as she seems to see it.

Kin a werewolf from Scotland, well that's me sold straight away lol. He's not that good at relationships either and needs to learn to talk rather than tell.

Add in a Fae king that has eyes on Hella and you have an entertaining PNR romance.

I found these to be a fun couple to read about and it was all interlaced through Fenix's story 😃.

Next book in the series, please.

***** REVIEW *****

I absolutely loved this book.  It was exciting, fun, passionate with a good dose of danger and peril.

Fenix is a delicious incubus, he's dealing with a yearning to be with his mate but is unable to be with her.  I really liked him and his love for Evelyn.

Evelyn is living a lie and I wanted her to realise this fact sooner than she did but in the flow of the story it added to the passion build-up!

So basically there is a curse to break and along with that a whole lot more story to pull you in.  I enjoyed Rosalind and Vail being in this story, their relationship is cute, but a balancing act! Archer, well he was an intriguing character.

This was a great installment in one of my favorite PNR series, bring on the next book.

FIVE STARS from me :)

Thanatos (Guardians of Hades #8) by Felicity Heaton - New Release - Review

Thanatos
(Guardians of Hades #8)
by Felicity Heaton

Thanatos, god of death, has a mission: scour the unknown realms of the Underworld and retrieve the only daughter of his god-king, Hades. Murdered six centuries ago and her soul captured before it could pass on, she now falls under Thanatos’s domain. Armed with only a description of the location of her prison seen in a vision by her oldest brother, Thanatos has spent four years hunting for her, determined to complete his task and save her.

But when he locates Calindria, she’s not the delicate little girl he remembers—she’s a fierce, bewitching and beautiful warrioress who stirs unwanted feelings in his black heart and she’s on a mission of her own.

Calindria, daughter of Hades, has a mission: escape her prison, hunt down the ones who murdered her twin brother, and then make her family pay for abandoning her. But the Fates have other plans, placing a distractingly gorgeous god of death in her path—a warrior who is determined to convince her that what she believed is the truth is in fact a lie.

In a realm that turns memories against them and where anything can be an illusion, can Calindria and Thanatos learn to trust each other enough to work together to escape the hellish domain, or will the darkest moments of their past prove too powerful to overcome?

My Review

We've had the boy's stories now it's time for Calindria, daughter of Hades!

Assumed dead and bitter for being left, she wants revenge - not surprising really after hundreds of years locked away! Enter Thanatos, he has been sent to find the lost daughter of Hades.

Who to start with.... Calindria, she is quite well balanced for being captive for so long, she's all grown up in body but I felt she needed to grow emotionally, as she came across as childish in parts - even though she had reasons to be pissed. I'm pleased to report she does grow.

Thanatos, is a God of Death, he assesses souls on their way out, he has wings and can fight. He also has issues he needs to deal with. A big problem is his attraction to the strong-willed Calindria.

The majority of this book focuses on Calindria and Thanatos which I really like as there's lots of character and relationship building.

I found their story was one full of all the good things you want in a paranormal romance and there was a pull between the characters which ended up with some heated scenes.

I'm intrigued to see what the next book in this series is about as I thought that was everyone paired up?

It’s a race against time and each other to fulfil the contract by taking out one of the most dangerous men in Hell, a vampire with a name befitting of his bloody history, but who will be the one to claim victory—one of them or the King of Death?

Find out in Scorched by Darkness, an enemies-to-lovers fated mates paranormal romance that will set your heart on fire!

I love this series, and I especially like the elves as that was how this series started, there's something about how their armour magically appears ❤️.

So this book features Hartt, he runs an assassin's guild. He has a few issues one being he has a darkness he needs to control.

Mackenzie also runs an assassin's guild and this is where these two meet.

I found the characters great, they worked so well together, especially as they're both independent people. I loved Harrt being told it's obvious they're fated ❤️

This book features quite a few previous main characters and that added to the story, especially if you have read the series in order.

The storyline kept you pulled in and there were some steamy moments and parts where my heart hurt.

A hot paranormal romance, loved it.

Excerpt

Fuming wasn’t a strong enough word for how Mackenzie was feeling. Furious? Filled with rage? Liable to detonate at a moment’s notice? That one seemed to convey the fire that burned up her blood and ignited something dangerous inside her as she searched for the male she had spotted.

That fire only blazed hotter as she finally located him on a rooftop overlooking the square, felt his gaze light on her as a shiver that cascaded over her entire body.

And then he was gone.

She clenched her jaw and cursed him as he sprinted across the rooftops, leaping alleys with ease.

Closing in on her mark.

Another bloody assassin!

Worse, he was an elf.

That could only mean one thing—her client had some explaining to do.

She was sure he was the reason the most renowned assassin’s guild in Hell just tossed their hat into the ring and was following her mark.

Mackenzie was swift to move, slipped through the crowd and worked her way back to the raised walkway where she had been when she had first spotted the other assassin. Where the sight of him had completely arrested her, bewitching her as if he was a mage rather than an elf. Her blood chilled at that word. Mage. She shook it off, together with the unsettling effect the elf had on her, and bit out another ripe curse as she checked his position.

The black-haired bastard was above the target now, looming at the edge of the roof, peering down at them and looking for all the world as if he was contemplating leaping on them.

Maybe he was.

Damn him. He was forcing her hand. She hadn’t come here to take down her mark, wasn’t appropriately armed for a kill.

She had come here to follow up a lead, part of her not expecting the vampire to be here tonight. Her plan had been to study him if he was and see what she could learn about him, to gather intelligence she could use to form a plan of attack. She regretted not bringing her arsenal with her now, but she hadn’t known she would have competition.

She was going to have to improvise.

Another, fouler, curse rolled off her tongue as five demons formed a blockade ahead of her. She sprinted right at them, unwilling to let them slow her down, fear a potent motivator as her gaze flicked to the elf again and then to her target as the idiot stopped right below him.

She nimbly leaped, slapped her left hand down on the shoulder of one of the big males and ran up the wall behind him. The demon grunted as she shoved off, growled as he twisted towards her, and she landed and ducked beneath the meaty fist he swung at her.

“Sorry!” she hollered over her shoulder without slowing.

She checked the elf again. Still there. What was he waiting for?

Her focus darted back to the mark.

He wasn’t alone.

The dark-haired male turned towards his companion—a stunningly beautiful woman with long white hair and curves to die for wrapped in cerulean leather.

A phantom made flesh.

The intel Jasynder had gathered for her was right then. The vampire was mated to a phantom. She could understand why the elf was hesitating now. Getting on the wrong side of a phantom was a sure-fire way of getting your soul devoured. It only took one kiss and the elf would be toast. Of course, the terrifying woman could kill Mackenzie just as easily with the same tactic, but phantoms were all female and preferred to turn males into ghosts to either use for procreation or to kill by draining their life essence.

Chances were high that if she and the elf both attacked at the same time, the phantom would target him, leaving Mackenzie open to take down the mark.

Which was going to be easier said than done. This vampire had a bloody reputation, led the fiercest legion of the Preux Chevaliers—an organisation of vampire mercenaries in Hell. Taking him down was going to be hard, and it was going to require some finesse if she didn’t want to die in the process, or before she could deal a fatal blow on him, but it would be worth it.

This contract was a huge deal for her guild.

Judging by the sour look on the elf’s face as he glared down at the couple and then at Mackenzie, it was a big deal for him too.

She glanced back at the mark.

“Shit!” she muttered as she saw they were gone.

She halted at the edge of the raised stone walkway and scanned the crowd with her senses, but there were too many people packed into the square. She couldn’t pick out vampire or phantom among the blur of scents and powers.

Mackenzie huffed and strode down the alley ahead of her, one that ran between the building where the elf still stood and the first building on the side of the square to her right. She exited it on a broader cobbled street and checked in both directions, and then did a quick lap of the demon district.

The thoroughfare was just as busy as the square, filled with demons grouped together in front of the one and two-storey grey stone buildings. Hordes of them had gathered around the tavern to the north of the district, a pale cream stone affair that was a contrast to all the dark grey. It was more elegant too, resembling something from the Victorian era.

“Hey,” she breathed as a big demon noticed her and his dusky horns curled a little, beginning to resemble those of a ram, and his crimson eyes brightened. She skimmed her hands down her burgundy corset to her hips, making sure she had the whole of his attention, and canted her head as she sidled up to him. “Don’t suppose you’ve seen a vampire and a phantom coming this way?”

He shook his head, and then growled and bared fangs when two other demons looked at her. She pegged one as from the Fifth Realm, and one as from the Second. Demons didn’t exactly like to share, but she needed information, and if a fight broke out, she would make a sharp exit.

“How about you, big guy?” She ran an assessing gaze over the demon from the Second Realm, taking a moment to appreciate all that muscle jammed into only a pair of tight black leathers, and how his black horns grew as he gave her a leisurely once-over in return. “You seen a vampire and a phantom?”

“Maybe,” he grunted and continued in stilted English, revealing he didn’t get out of Hell much, “What… information… worth?”

“More than you can afford, gorgeous.” She offered a sultry smile because that was all he was getting from her.

He hadn’t seen anything. None of them had. She debated questioning the others and then decided against it. She wasn’t going to find her mark again tonight. By now, he was either holed up in the vampire district to the north of the enormous cavern, or he had used one of the portal pathways and gone back to his stronghold in Hell.

Damn it.

She ogled the demon one last time, shutting out a stray thought that left her reeling—she liked her men a little leaner and a lot meaner.

The elf popped into her head.

She was about to banish him, but paused and frowned as she shrugged. Her mark was gone, but she could still come away from tonight with some valuable intel if she tailed the assassin. It might go some way towards making her feel better.

Mackenzie returned to the square and looked up to her right, at the rooftop. He was gone. She muttered another curse, one that felt like the millionth she had unleashed since noticing the elf.

That sizzle-spark rolled along her spine again and she jerked her head down.

Her gaze collided with pure amethyst across a sea of people, violet that held her fast as a thousand tingles tripped through her.

The elf frowned at her, his sensual lips turning downwards as a disapproving look settled on his handsome face. The black slashes of his eyebrows met hard and he pivoted, breaking the spell he had placed her under. She shook off the lingering effect and glared at his back as he eased through the crowd, heading towards the clock tower at the other end of the square.

Mackenzie gave him a few seconds to build a lead and then followed, keeping her senses trained on him so he couldn’t escape her.

Which of the elves was he? There was only one guild in Hell that employed his kind, and when she had been researching assassin organisations with the intent of forming one of her own, before she had joined a guild instead, two names had come up.

Fuery and Hartt.

Rumour didn’t need to paint an interesting picture of them. Fact had already done it. The two elves were practically famous and as far as she could tell, one was as bad as the other.

As dangerous and deadly as her mark.

Their mark.

Her client had obviously hired him too and she couldn’t really blame him for putting the contract out for tender at several guilds. Not when there was a ridiculously high chance the vampire would kill whoever was sent to take him down.

The elf hit the broad street that cut through the witches’ district. She locked up tight when he suddenly stopped and began to turn his head. She ducked behind a group of shifters, sure he was looking for her. Her heart shot into her throat and pounded there, adrenaline a sweet kick in her veins as she edged forwards and risked peering around the female shifter who was looking down at her as if she were insane.

He was gone. Damn him.

Mackenzie stood and tiptoed, peered over the heads of the crowd and tried to find him. The tightness in her chest evaporated as she spotted him heading along the side of the square and she hurried to catch up with him as he ducked into an alley.

Following an elf with a reputation as dark as the one attributed to the two assassins in his guild into an alley was probably suicide. That thought flickered through her mind, but she paid it no heed. She mounted the steps up onto the stone walkway and pressed her back to the building beside the alley.

Being prepared was worth the risk. She had never seen an assassin from his guild in the flesh, and she wanted to know what she was up against because she doubted her client was going to change his mind about having more than one assassin guild on this job for him.

The elf was her competition, and he was going down.

She needed to be the one to take out the mark. Claiming a trophy of this magnitude would establish her guild as one of the most prestigious in Hell. It would finally get her small band of assassins recognised and would lead to getting bigger and better contracts.

Her guild needed this.

Ever since she had taken over leadership of it a few decades ago, they had struggled to keep their heads above water, let alone establish themselves in the fiercely competitive world of contract killing. It was a miracle this client had approached them and offered this opportunity, and she wouldn’t mess up this chance they had been given.

She had to secure the kill for her guild.

She leaned left and peered into the alley, glared at the elf’s back as he strolled away from her.

Plus, she had a score to settle.

She had lost track of the number of clients who had dumped her guild halfway through a contract because an opening had come up at the one he worked for. Her scowl deepened, mostly because those electric shivers were back as she studied him, sending heat rolling through her.

Damn him.

But there was something arresting about him.

The fluid way he moved, a startling combination of grace and raw sexuality that shouldn’t be possible considering he wore a drab black knee-length tunic over his tight trousers, was drawing more than just her gaze to him. Every female in the alley looked him over after he had passed them and some had the courage to eye him up as he approached.

One even offered herself up to him.

He politely turned her down with a smile and a wave of his hand.

The subtle shift of his body caused the fine material of the tunic to pull taut over his biceps and across his broad shoulders, revealing toned muscles. Apparently, elves had incredible armour that was imbued with magic or something. The black scales resided in twin bracelets and could cover their owner in a handful of seconds if they issued a mental command. Those scales could transform into talons too, and only metal of the same type could cut through it.

She had never seen it in the flesh, but heat sizzled through her as she pictured what he would look like in only skin-tight black armour that revealed everything.

And she meant everything.

Several of the accounts she had read about elf armour, and some of the ones she had been told by women who had witnessed it, had been very clear about that. Every muscle on their body showed, and not just that, but you could tell the size of the package on offer too.

That sizzle became a spark that ignited her blood, had her thoughts going hazy for a moment before she snapped herself back to the world and shut it down.

She blamed the elf for her out-of-control libido and imagination, put it down to his good looks and incredible physique, and the fact it had been far too long since she had taken the time to scratch her itches.

She wouldn’t let herself get distracted by him.

It would be a death sentence.

He was the enemy and he had clocked her in the square, knew they were after the same mark. He was probably aware of her right now and was leading her to her doom. Well, it would be his doom that awaited him at the end of this dance.

Mackenzie tailed him, studying everything he did, learning all she could about him, right down to which foot he favoured as he pivoted and turned down another alley. The more she knew about him, the more likely it was she would survive a fight against him.

And they would come to blows.

She felt that in her gut.

She peeked into the alley. He was still a good fifty feet ahead of her. She slipped into the narrower space, hating the way the two dark stone buildings seemed to close in on her to steal all the light. The strange burn he had ignited in her blood turned to ice and she breathed through it as her chest constricted. She was fine. She focused on the electric lamp mounted on the wall at the end of the alley, using the soft light it emitted to banish the darkness.

The memories.

As the momentary panic passed and her senses came back online, she swore under her breath.

The elf was gone.

“Damn it, Mackenzie,” she muttered and frowned as she hurried forwards. “Losing track of your targets now?”

It wasn’t like her. She prided herself on her skills, on her dedication to her work and how professional she was compared with a lot of other assassins. She had never lost track of a mark and now she had done it twice in one night.

She slowed her pace, catching herself. Rushing headlong after the elf was a foolish move. Whether the male was Hartt or Fuery, he was a merciless killer. Darkness made flesh.

And sharp as a blade too.

The tales of them were legendary. More than one account glorified how quickly they could think on their feet and how intelligent they were. She supposed skills like that came with the territory when you were thousands of years old.

She took a moment to breathe, to focus her mind again. She was quick and clever too.

He wasn’t going to get the jump on her.

She brought her guard up again as she slipped a dagger free of the sheathe at her waist and stretched her senses around her as she exited the alley onto the main street that cut through the heart of the demon district. She palmed the grip of the blade, her pulse picking up as she scoured the area.

Nothing.

Had he teleported back to Hell?

She squeaked as a hand suddenly appeared around her throat and hauled her back against a rock-hard body, and shivered as his deep baritone teased her ear.

“Looking for me?”

Keras (Guardians of Hades Paranormal Romance Series Book 7)
by Felicity Heaton
Keras is darkness. It sustains him. It strengthens him. It offers relief from the pain born of his feelings for a goddess of Olympus, a bewitching and beautiful female placed beyond his reach—one who stole his heart and broke it. Centuries of enduring that pain have left him tired, and the temptation to surrender control to that side of himself grows each day.

Even when he knows that darkness will destroy him.

Enyo has regrets. Hundreds of them. But the one that has plagued her for centuries, is the moment that shattered her friendship with the firstborn of Hades and her own heart with it—a moment that changed her and set her on a new path. With the battle between the sons of Hades and the daemons turning more dangerous for the man she loves, she can no longer stand on the side lines.

It’s time for this goddess of war to risk everything to fight for what she wants.

As the battle to save the Underworld and the mortal realm rages to dangerous new heights, will Keras be consumed by the darkness or will Enyo be the light that saves him?

EXCERPT

Enyo smoothed her black breastplate, fingers rubbing over the point where it met her waist, flowing down to the strips of onyx leather that encircled her hips. She repeated the process over and over again as she peered at herself in the mirror. The bright sunlight that streamed in through the windows on the left and right of her bedroom reflected off the silver metalwork on her armour.

Her senses stretched around her, sharpening to keep track of her brother. He remained at a distance, which was helping to keep her nerves in check, but did nothing to help her vanquish them completely.

The thought of what she was about to do kept them at a constant simmer inside her, had her smoothing her armour again. She twisted away from the mirror, pacing across the marble floor, her boots loud in the heavy silence that shrouded her. She struggled with her fear, battled it violently, refusing to let it get the better of her. She was a goddess of war, born for battle, shouldn’t be afraid of what she was about to do.

She kept telling herself that again and again, but it wouldn’t sink in.

Enyo paced back across her bedroom, each swift stride carrying her rapidly from one wall of the pale room to the other. She stilled when she sensed someone outside in the corridor, her focus narrowing on them as she waited. They moved on and she breathed a little easier when she realised it was only one of her brother’s aides.

This was foolish of her. If her brother discovered what she was about to do, or found out after she had gone through with it, he would be furious with her. She had vowed not to interfere with the war erupting in the Underworld, but she couldn’t stand by any longer, allowing the sons of Hades to fight alone.

She needed to be there, needed to help them.

Needed to help him.

Enyo strode back to the mirror, untied her hair and raked her fingers through it, smoothing the long black strands. Was it better down? She canted her head left and right, unable to decide. It was better down. No. It was better up. It looked more professional, would give a better impression, and make it clear she was only there to offer help.

Even when she wasn’t.

She pulled her hair back and twisted it into a bun, fastening it with silver clasps. Much better.

Her stomach flipped, and not for the first time. It had been constantly turning since she had made her decision. She would leave Olympus. She would go against her brother’s wishes. She had to.

So why was she still here?

Why couldn’t she find the courage to face him?

Enyo blew out her breath, seeking the resolve she had felt when she had spoken with Marek.

She needed to do this. She needed to see Keras again.

She needed to face him.

She was a goddess of war, not a weak little maiden.

But the thought of facing Keras was more terrifying than the thought of entering a battle where it was only her against ten thousand powerful enemies.

She pivoted away from the mirror, crossed the room to her wardrobes and rifled through her dresses. She stopped herself. Looked down at her armour. She looked fine in it. She was just delaying things now.

Enyo drew down another deep breath and summoned the power to teleport before her nerve failed her again.

Light whirled around her and when it dissipated, she was standing on the zinc roof of a Parisian townhouse.

She stared across the road at the building opposite her, all of her focus on it, her nerves rising faster now.

Keras was in there.

She could feel his power, and gods, it was a sweet comfort and a torment at the same time. How long had it been since she had felt this? How long had it been since she had seen him?

She slowly eased into a crouch, planting one hand between her spread knees for balance. The night air was cool around her, heavy with the scent of rain. In the distance thunder rumbled.

Enyo lingered, eyes fixed on the warmly lit windows of the pale townhouse opposite her, heart thudding against her chest.

That heart shot into her throat when a black shadow moved across one of the windows to the right of the building, drawing her gaze there.

Keras.

She swallowed to wet her dry mouth as she watched him move around the room. A trickle of excitement ran through her blood, an urge to move closer so she could see him more clearly filling her. She wanted a better look at him, not these stolen moments where she couldn’t see all of him. She wanted to see if he was as she remembered him.

But still she hesitated.

Her mind filled with when they were last together and she cursed her own weakness.

Keras wouldn’t want to see her, and she could understand that. She despised how she had acted then, how weak she had been, allowing her brother to manipulate her and use that weakness against her.

He had taken her fear, all of her doubts, and moulded them into a weapon.

And she had been blind to it.

She had believed him when he had told her that Hades would never approve of the match, that he would expect more for his firstborn son than her.

Hearing that had stung her, not only because she had believed she could be with Keras but because it made her realise that her brother thought she wasn’t worthy of someone like him. It had shown her how little he thought of her.

Looking back now, she could see why he had done it.

Marrying Keras would not only have reflected badly on her brother Ares because he had promised her to another, but she would have been elevated in society and may have even surpassed him in standing and power. Her eyes were open now. She had learned over the last two centuries that her brother was an egotistical bastard, lived to constantly hold her back so she couldn’t surpass him.

He had trampled her feelings to keep her in her place.

She should have known that the moment he had confronted her two centuries ago, should have seen the reason why he had done it, why he had chosen to confront her the second he had noticed she was spending a lot of time with Keras and the two of them had been growing close.

Gods, she had been so defensive in response and had denied feeling something for Keras, and that was something she had come to regret. Her weakness had plagued her these last two hundred years.

She should have stood up to her brother.

She shouldn’t have let him walk all over her like that.

It had taken her far too many centuries to reach this breaking point, but she was going to step over that line her brother Ares had drawn, was going to defy him and do what her heart desired for once.

That heart ached as Keras moved to the next room, briefly disappearing before he appeared beyond an elegant couch. He kept walking, concealed by another wall for a hard beat of her heart before he emerged. He opened cupboards and withdrew some things, set them down before him and stood with his back to the window—to her—obscuring her view of the items.

What was he doing?

Preparing a meal?

A smile wound its way onto her lips as she recalled a moment with him, one shortly after he had moved into his own home on the grounds of the main palace in the Underworld.

He had confessed he found the thought of learning to cook appealing.

She had teased him often about that in the years that had followed, and always he had grumbled about how his parents insisted that the household staff took care of that sort of thing for him.

His parents were as old-world as her brother, believed that cooking and cleaning were the domain of servants, not the gods who ruled the lands of the Underworld and Olympus.

Enyo had tried to cook once, had been wandering the shores of Olympus near to the port and had found herself on rocks that jutted out into the crystal-clear water. Fish had been swimming around below her, and she had watched them for a while before realising that she wasn’t alone.

Two men had been fishing further along the shore and she had approached them, had been curious about what they were doing. They had kindly answered her questions and made an offering of fish to her.

She had attempted to cook it on their open fire, much to their amusement.

Apparently, it was better to remove the guts first.

A lesson that she still remembered now, together with how she had made the two men laugh by mentioning how removing guts was a specialty of hers.

Enyo let those memories fade away and focused back on the present, on the dark god in the building opposite her as he stood with his back to her, still in the same place she had left him when her mind had wandered.

She was putting things off. She knew it deep in her heart. The memories she conjured were a distraction, a way of lingering where she was, avoiding facing him.

She pulled down an unsteady breath and blew it out, steeling herself.

“Be brave,” she murmured softly and rose to her feet.

She clenched her fists at her sides and then flexed her fingers, called to mind all the times she had gone to battle. Countless wars. She had fought in thousands of them with her brother and sometimes alone. This was no different to them, and no more frightening.

It was though.

It was infinitely more terrifying.

She hadn’t seen Keras since he had been banished to this world.

Since she had told him that she was betrothed to another.

She stared at Keras’s back, aching with the need to go to him, to look into his eyes and read his feelings in them as she used to.

Had he ever had feelings for her beyond friendship?

He had closely guarded his heart when she had known him, had never given her a clear indication that he felt the same way as she did. Maybe if he had, she would have found the courage to defy her brother two hundred years ago.

She pushed those thoughts aside, aware that they weren’t helping her and that there was no point in thinking about how things might have been. She couldn’t change the past.

She could only shape the future.

Starting right here, right now.

By speaking with him again.

Would he remember her?

Marek said that he did, but for some reason she couldn’t bring herself to place what little faith she had in the words he had offered her. She feared that Marek was wrong and that if Keras had ever felt something for her, those feelings either no longer existed or no longer matched hers.

“Focus on why you are here,” she muttered, using it to bolster her courage. “You came to give him information.”

A sound plan.

One she had put into motion upon hearing from her brother that Nemesis had betrayed Hades.

Enyo had done a little digging, as Marek called it, and had heard many rumours about Nemesis.

She sucked down another breath and held it as she teleported, appearing in a swirl of white-blue smoke in the kitchen of Keras’s home.

Only a few feet behind him.

Her heart thundered, blood rushing like a torrent through her veins as nerves instantly crashed over her, had her hands shaking so badly she had to ball them into fists at her sides.

To distract herself from her fear, she took in the room, not missing how different it was to Marek’s Spanish villa.

It suited Keras.

There was an understated elegance about the room, a sense of luxury in every small detail. Clean white walls. Crisp polished wood. Delicate fabrics on the chairs seated around the table to her right. A chandelier that twinkled at her through the doorway beyond it, the crystals and gold reflecting warm light.

She could only imagine the money Keras had poured into his home.

It was opulent.

Befitting of the firstborn of Hades.

It was also very neat. Everything had a place and was in it, and not a speck of dust marred the furniture. She had never noticed how neat Keras was.

Her gaze strayed back to him, her heartbeat going off the scale again as she mustered her courage, as curiosity tugged a question to her lips.

Why hadn’t he sensed her yet?

Maybe he had. Maybe he was aware of her and too angry with her to face her. She studied him and frowned when she sensed no anger in him. She would have pondered whether he was struggling with other emotions.

Only she couldn’t sense anything coming from him.

Which was odd.

She had been attuned to him once, able to detect the slightest shift in his feelings. Perhaps in their years apart, that skill had grown rusty or a distance had grown between them, stealing it from her.

Enyo watched him for a few seconds more, giving herself time to grow accustomed to the fact it was Keras before her.

His rich masculine scent was the same, teased her senses with earth and spice, had her recalling the time she had fallen asleep resting against his shoulder in the secluded arbour in her brother’s garden.

It warmed her.

Soothed her.

Gave her the courage she had been lacking as he opened the cupboard set into the kitchen island in front of him and bent over.

“It has been two centuries since I last laid eyes upon that fine backside but I do believe I would recognise it anywhere.” Enyo cringed as she finished saying that, sure she had made a terrible mistake and he wouldn’t remember that day several hundred years ago, when they had been hunting in the mortal world and his horse had bolted.

She had found him thrown face first into a bush, his backside sticking out of it, and had remarked about recognising his fine backside.

Tense seconds trickled past.

Keras straightened and turned. “Enyo!”

When he smiled at her, his emerald eyes lighting up with it, all of her nerves rushed out of her, replaced with warmth that heated her right down to her marrow.

To her soul.

Gods, he was as gorgeous as she remembered, and something hit her hard.

She had missed him so badly.

Surprise swept through her when he stepped into her and wrapped his arms around her, swiftly giving way to a lightness that chased every shadow from her heart, every fear from her mind as he held her.

She hugged him back, closed her eyes and told herself to keep it together and not be weak. She leaned into his embrace, fighting tears that stung her eyes. A whirlwind of emotions swept through her, tangled ribbons of them that pulled her along with them, had her spinning as she held him.

She kissed his cheek, secretly breathed him in.

He still smelled the same. Still felt the same. If not better. It had been centuries, but she had never forgotten how good it felt to be in his arms.

She did her best not to cling to him, not to let him see how deeply his friendly greeting was affecting her as a single thought spun through her mind.

It was Keras—his cheek beneath her lips, his strong arms around her.

She pulled herself together and withdrew her lips, before she ended up making a fool of herself. If she hadn’t managed that already.

Keras drew back and smiled at her. “Anyone would think you had missed me.”

She laughed, but couldn’t deny it. “There isn’t a man in all the Underworld who can hug like you do.”

His arms dropped away from her as he stepped back, the embrace over too soon, and she schooled her features to hide her disappointment.

Her nerves began to rise again as silence stretched between them once more, as he stared at her and she swore something lit his green eyes, something cold and dark.

“I have been scouting the Underworld,” she blurted, and cursed herself.

She crushed her nerves.

They rose back up again, persistent and more than a little annoying.

She needed to appear strong, as confident as she used to be. She needed Keras to believe she had only come to relay information to him, at least until she felt sure of a few things.

Like whether or not he hated her now.

“People have been seen entering Nemesis’s realm over the last few decades. Not the usual gods or goddesses who are summoned there either. I heard several reports that people of an unknown breed had visited her.”

Keras leaned his backside against the black counter of the island and folded his arms across his chest. Her gaze crept down to it, to the onyx material that hugged his lean muscled figure. The modern dress of the mortal world suited him, accentuated his fine figure, revealing his long legs and how his wide shoulders tapered into a trim waist.

“What breeds?” His deep voice rolled over her, warming her and making it hard to think.

“I am not sure.” That was the truth and not just because she felt a little addled being in his presence again, was still a little off-balance from the hug he had given her. “There were reports of both males and females, but none of them gods or goddesses. Not even demigods of note, but I cannot be certain there are not some involved. I can question the people who spoke of them and see if they know. Perhaps even visit the communities and ask questions there.”

“If more Hellspawn are involved, Father would want to know.”

Hellspawn. A term he and his brothers often used for the breeds Hades had allowed to remain in the Underworld after the last rebellion. The breeds that had been banished had been renamed daemons, a word that sounded more like a vile curse whenever Hades or Keras had spoken it in front of her.

Keras dipped his head and a damp ribbon of black hair slipped onto his brow, curled there and caressed his pale skin.

He had bathed recently. Just the thought of him doing such a thing had heat licking through her veins. She fought it and subdued it, aware that Keras’s senses were strong and not wanting him to detect the desire that still burned inside her despite their centuries apart.

He swept the rogue strand back and ran his long fingers through his hair. “Thank you for your information.”

Enyo frowned at that, his cold response causing her nerves to gain ground. Was he angry with her because she had never come to see him? Marek had told her more than once that she caused him trouble when she came to see him rather than Keras, that Keras was always furious with him.

Was he furious with her too?

He leaned to his right and went to turn.

Her gaze snagged on the bottle on the black counter and the empty glass beside it. “What is that?”

She jerked her chin towards it.

Keras didn’t even glance at it. “An experiment.”

She read the red and white label. Vodka. She knew what that was.

“Alcohol?” Her gaze leaped back to collide with his as shock rippled through her. “I thought that—”

Keras cut her off. “Valen tried it and went off the deep end.”

“Off the deep end?” She couldn’t hide the confusion that swept over her, knew he had heard it when a semblance of a smile touched his lips.

“A mortal saying. It means to lose control. To be wild.”

Enyo filed it away as she looked from the bottle to him, concern replacing her confusion. Valen had lost control, and Keras had decided to imbibe the same mortal-made brew that had made him wild.

Did he want to go off the deep end too?

“And you?” She frowned at him. “What did you feel?”

Her eyes strayed to the bottle again.

“Nothing.” Keras shifted a step to his left, into the path of her gaze.

“Why?” She lifted her eyes back to his, unsure whether she was asking him why it hadn’t worked or why he had done something as reckless as drinking mortal alcohol when he knew how badly it affected him and his brothers.

He hiked his shoulders. “I am still trying to figure that one out.”

Enyo moved around him, deeper into the kitchen, curiosity and concern pulling her forwards, flooding her with a need to see the bottle. “How much did you drink?”

He took hold of it before she could get a look at it by moving around him and held it up for her to see.

A third of it was missing.

Far more than she had expected.

She hoped to the gods that he had at least started with a sip to gauge his reaction to it rather than diving straight in at a full glass.

She stared at the bottle, unable to shake the feeling something was wrong. Very wrong. A third of a bottle of alcohol was a lot for him to drink. Was this more than an experiment?

Had he hoped to awaken the same destructive power that Valen had by drinking alcohol?

Her gaze drifted back to meet his.

Why would he want to unleash that sort of power on this world?

His eyes revealed nothing, not a single trace of what he was feeling. His heart was closed to her, and it chilled her, had the warmth she had felt from being in his presence and in his arms turning to ice in her veins.

She reminded herself that she deserved his anger and this cold shoulder. She had come here to make amends, to slowly piece their friendship back together and perhaps even build on it in time. Olympus hadn’t been built in a day, and she was going to have to pick up the rubble of their past before she could begin constructing the future she wanted with him.

Or at least a path that might bring her there if he felt something for her.

Right now, she wasn’t sure that he did.

In fact, she felt certain he didn’t, and that he never had.

She tried to focus on the present, refusing to let the past jade her or read into things too much. She had leaped the first hurdle. She just had to keep on her feet now and keep running forwards. No looking back.

“Perhaps your inhibitors are too strong?” she said.

He tensed and his eyes darkened briefly, a shadow passing across them that lifted when he glanced down at his wrists, at the twin bands that encircled them, dampening his powers so he could be in this world without destroying it with the strength of them.

She’d had thousands of years in this world to learn to control her power, and he had been thrust into it without any training, expected to know how to hold back his strength.

“A reaction?” Enyo watched him closely, canting her head to her right as she tried to decipher whether the alcohol he had consumed was affecting him.

He barely shook his head and didn’t look at her.

She closed the distance between them again and took hold of his hands. An electric thrill bolted up both of her arms, had a shiver tripping down her spine as she felt the coolness of his skin against hers. He had always run a few degrees colder than her, something she blamed on his father’s genes.

Hades could be as cold as they came.

Enyo used her thumbs to brush the cuffs of his black dress shirt back and stroked them over the twin braided onyx bands that encircled his wrists, sitting flush against his skin. The power locked within them seeped into her.

The man she had known in the Underworld.

Never as strong as she was, but still incredibly powerful.

She watched her thumbs caressing his wrists, fought another bout of nerves and ridiculous tears that wanted to fill her eyes as she felt a shadow of the connection that had once existed between them.

Keras’s hands.

Strong. Capable. Skilled in battle.

Wrestling her emotions back under control, she lifted her gaze to his face, burning with a need to take it in again.

His green eyes lingered on her hands where she touched him, something she couldn’t decipher slowly filling them.

“I really did miss you,” she whispered, and cursed when the tears she thought she had wrangled under control began to fill her eyes. She blinked them away before he could see them. “I haven’t had a good fight in centuries.”

He smiled, but it lacked the emotion it would have held once.

He slipped his hands free of hers and turned his back to her, grabbed the glass and carried it to the sink to her left.

Enyo stared at the bottle on the black counter.

It worried her to see him doing something so irresponsible.

It wasn’t like him.

Sure, she had been hitting the ambrosia again recently, since things had started getting more intense in the mortal world. She had needed the escape it offered as her worry for Keras’s safety had grown.

Was Keras seeking such an escape too?

Keras casually turned back to face her, the air between them growing awkward again, something she felt sure she was the only one feeling. He stared at her in silence, and again she was hit by the fact that there wasn’t a single trace of emotion in his emerald eyes, none of the anger she deserved for avoiding him for two centuries and for the manner of their parting.

He was strangely calm.

There wasn’t even a hint of hurt in him.

It made her feel as if she was looking at a different man.

In the centuries she had known him, Keras had always shared his father’s personality, often calm on the surface but seething with powerful emotions beneath, a churning and dangerous mass of them that were liable to erupt to the surface at any moment. He had always been unpredictable. She had never known when his temper would snap, but she had always known when he was angry. His tone had never revealed it, but his eyes had.

Now those eyes were empty as they gazed at her.

She thought about the things Marek had said to her and the messages Valen had sent.

And felt they were both right.

Something was wrong with Keras.

Very wrong.

MY REVIEW

Action-packed paranormal romance.

We're back with the brothers again and one thing you'll get with this book is action, because the battle is getting closer. Along with the fight scenes there's a long-awaited reconnection of Keras and Enyo. ❤️

Keras has a dark side that needs taming, it's a power that could hurt a lot of people. Keras may be powerful but his also a protective and caring brother and lover it seems!

Enyo, she's a tough cookie herself. She has waited a long time to get her man and she's not backing off this time. I really liked her and of course she's perfect for Keras.

The author keeps you waiting for a hea and trust me there are some really aww moments and some twists in there to throw you off course.

I loved the end of the book, it could have been the series finale, but I'm excited to read the next book.

4.5 stars
